The Balearic Islands are once again leading national economic indicators. Business confidence in the archipelago has increased by 6.6 percent for the third quarter of the year, the largest increase recorded among all autonomous communities and well above the national average, which stands at 3.2 percent. This is reflected in the latest Harmonized Business Confidence Indicator (ICEA), published Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The figures confirm an atmosphere of optimism among the Balearic business community, driven by favorable prospects for the summer months, traditionally the peak period of economic activity in the islands. The combination of a solid tourist season, dynamic household spending, and positive expectations among businesses largely explains this growth.

One of the indicators that best reflects this sentiment is the balance of expectations, which measures the difference between the opinions of optimistic business owners and those with a more pessimistic outlook on their companies’ performance. In the Balearic Islands, this indicator stands at 14.6 points, a figure that highlights the predominance of favorable forecasts for the July-September quarter.

Moderate optimism

Specifically, 24.8 percent of companies believe their business performance will be favorable during this period, almost two percentage points above the national average of 23 percent. At the other end of the scale, only 10.2 percent anticipate an unfavorable trend, while the majority – 65 percent – expect business to remain stable, describing their business performance as ‘normal’.

The results also reflect a positive assessment of the previous quarter. The balance, which compares favorable and unfavorable responses for the period already ended, stands at 10.1 points in the Balearic Islands, slightly above the national average of 10 points.

In this section, 21.5 percent of surveyed business owners consider the recent trend of their business to have been favorable. Although this percentage remains slightly below the Spanish average (23%), this is offset by a higher proportion of respondents describing the situation as stable: 67.1% of those surveyed, compared to 64% nationwide. Meanwhile, the proportion of business owners with a negative rating stands at 11.4 percent.

In general, INE data suggest that the business fabric of the Balearic Islands enters the third quarter with a higher level of confidence than the rest of Spain, consolidating a trend of optimism driven mainly by the strength of the islands’ economy and the boost provided by the high season.
