The Balearic Islands welcomed 6.86 million international air passengers during the first half of the year, representing a 3.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025. According to data released Monday by Turespaña, this figure accounts for 12.6% of the 54.6 million passengers who arrived in Spain during the first six months of 2026.
Last June alone, the archipelago welcomed 2.32 million passengers, representing a year-over-year increase of 1.7%—the highest figure in the country and accounting for 20.9% of the national total. Looking at destination airports, the government agency highlights the figures for Palma, with 1.71 million passengers (+1.6%) in June and 5.42 million (+2.9%) in the first half of the year, and Ibiza Airport, with 423,993 (+1.4%) and 1.02 million (+2.3%).
As for passenger traffic on low-cost airlines, the Balearic Islands have recorded 4.97 million international passengers so far this year, a year-over-year increase of 3.5% that accounts for 15.1% of the national total. In June, the figure was 1.59 million, a 3.7% increase representing 23.2% of the national total. Traditional airlines, meanwhile, recorded 1.88 million passengers (2.1% and 8.7%) in the first half of the year and 724,146 (-2.6% and 17%) last month.
Source markets
According to data from Turespaña, the Balearic Islands stand out as a favorite destination for some of the main source markets nationwide. This is the case with the United Kingdom, which in June sent approximately 2.6 million international passengers to Spain, accounting for 23.7% of all arrivals in the country. The archipelago was their top destination, accounting for 26% of the total.
The same is true of Germany, from which 1.4 million passengers flew last month; 47.4% of them traveled to the Balearic Islands, a figure that has remained stable compared to previous years. Italy accounted for 10% of passenger traffic in June, and although the highest growth rates were recorded in Andalusia and the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands also saw a notable increase.
National Data
In terms of overall figures, Spain as a whole welcomed 54.6 million international air passengers during the first half of the year, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and an absolute increase of 2.6 million arrivals. In June alone, international passenger arrivals reached nearly 11.1 million, representing a 4% increase compared to the same month last year.
The vast majority of these passenger flows came from Europe, which accounted for 87% of total arrivals, with growth of 4.4%, while the American market represented 8.4%, with a slight increase of 0.6%. At the other end of the spectrum, passenger numbers from Asia fell 5.3% year-over-year, and arrivals from the Persian Gulf countries declined, dragged down by instability in the Middle East.
By source markets in June, the United Kingdom solidified its position as the leading country of origin, contributing nearly 2.6 million travelers—23.7% of the total—and posting a 4.6% increase. Germany followed with 1.4 million passengers, although it experienced a 2.3% decline due to lower travel to the Canary Islands. Meanwhile, Italy showed a notable 7.9% increase, surpassing one million travelers; France grew by 1.2% to nearly 795,000 passengers; and the Netherlands saw a 3% decline. Outside Europe, notable increases were seen in China, Canada, and Latin America, while the United States saw a 1.7% slowdown.
As for the autonomous communities of destination, the six main regions accounted for 97% of international arrivals in June. The Balearic Islands led the rankings with 20.9% of total passengers, followed closely by Catalonia with 20.8% and the Community of Madrid with 20.1%. With the exception of the Canary Islands, all the major autonomous communities posted positive growth in the sixth month of the year, with the Valencian Community standing out for its strong performance, posting double-digit growth of 11.2%.
Finally, within the national airport network, Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport led the way after recording 2.2 million international passengers in June, representing a year-over-year increase of 3.8%. In second place was Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which reached 2 million international passengers after recording a 3.9% increase.
