Flight bookings made by Spanish travelers to destinations where the total solar eclipse on August 12 will be visible have quadrupled compared to the same period last year, according to data from the online travel agency Kiwi.com. Mallorca, in particular, has been one of the most popular destinations, as the Balearic Islands will be one of the best places to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon. As if there weren’t already enough reasons to visit the islands.

The number of Spanish passengers with tickets to travel between August 7 and 12 to destinations within the path of the totality has increased by 304 percent compared to 2025, according to the company, which attributes this to the growth of tourism linked to this astronomical phenomenon. At the same time, Mallorca is one of the destinations that has experienced the largest increase in demand. The number of Spanish travelers with flights to Palma during the eclipse dates has increased by 497 percent compared to last year. As Kiwi.com points out, the Balearic Islands will be the last place on Earth from which the total eclipse can be observed, with the sun near the horizon during the event.

The approximate average price of a ticket to Palma on those dates is 92.50 euros per passenger, with prices normally ranging from 60 to 80 euros, according to the company’s figures.

The Cantabrian coast has also experienced an increase in bookings. Flights by Spanish passengers to Santander and Bilbao during the eclipse period have increased by 122 percent year-over-year. Travelers heading north book their flights an average of 88.3 days before departure, compared to the overall average of 92.3 days, and the average price per passenger is €136.93.

Nordic alternative

Iceland is emerging as a popular option for travelers specifically seeking to witness the phenomenon. The number of Spanish passengers flying to the country during these dates has increased by 135 percent, with an average price of €477.79 per person and an average booking lead time of 109.7 days. Kiwi.com notes that the data for this destination are indicative only due to the small sample size.

Kiwi.com’s Vice President of Consumer Products, Michal Sindelár, highlighted that the data reflect “three completely different types of trips” in response to the same phenomenon: a short getaway to Mallorca, a flexible trip through northern Spain, and a planned expedition to Iceland.
