Part time travel, part floating maritime museum—that’s the 19th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica, which is taking place in Barcelona through July 11. Organized by Puig and the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, the competition will run through July 11. The official races will be held from Thursday through Saturday, with the races scheduled to begin each day at 1:00 p.m.
The weather forecast predicts perfect conditions for sailing. Although the intense summer sun has triggered heat advisories in the area, the classic midday thermal breezes in Barcelona will ensure steady winds of between 8 and 15 knots—ideal conditions for the smooth running of the on-water races.
As for spectators, the city offers excellent vantage points. Places like Barceloneta Beach, Port Vell, Port Olímpic, and the Maremàgnum Bridge will serve as grandstands with prime views for watching the show
Jewelry with a History: From Hollywood to the Cold War
Beyond the sporting aspect, the true essence of this regatta lies in the immeasurable historical value of the vessels. Among the nautical gems that will sail the waters of Barcelona, the Manitou stands out—a sloop built in 1937 that went down in history as the “floating White House,” as it was President John F. Kennedy’s favorite retreat during the tense years of the Cold War.
Sailing alongside her will be the Eilean, a majestic ketch built in 1936 that achieved worldwide fame in 1982 after starring in the music video for the song “Rio” by the band Duran Duran. After years of neglect while stranded on the island of Antigua, the vessel was completely restored in 2006 and today sails as an indisputable symbol of the revival of Europe’s maritime heritage.
