Mallorca always comes first. Before the titles, before the clay courts of Paris, and even before the spotlights that have followed Rafa Nadal’s every move for two decades. The island is in his way of speaking, in his silences, and in that constant need to return home after every tournament. Now, with the release of his new Netflix documentary, the Balearic tennis player has once again made it clear that his story cannot be understood without the Mediterranean that saw him grow up.

Living in Mallorca has been absolutely vital to my happiness and to being close to the people I love.

Nadal confessed to the press during an emotional event full of memories. A simple phrase that captures much of the essence of the documentary: an intimate portrait of a unique athlete who never wanted to lose touch with his roots.

The documentary, which will soon be on Netflix, offers a much more personal look at the champion from Manacor. Far from the image of the relentless competitor, Nadal speaks openly about his childhood, the pressure of living with the demands of success from a very young age, and the injuries that marked the final stage of his career. But above all, he talks about family. The importance of staying close to his loved ones even when the world tour made him one of the most recognized figures on the planet.

And it’s Mallorca again. The island appears not just as a backdrop, but as an emotional refuge. The quiet streets of Manacor, the calm sea at dawn, and the daily routine away from the international spotlight form the emotional landscape of Christmas. While other athletes opted to settle far from home, he made the Balearic Islands his center of gravity, as Franco Battiato would say. From there, he trained, rested, and protected a private life he always tried to keep away from media scrutiny.

The documentary also explores one of the most challenging aspects for the former tennis player: opening up about his private life.

For me, the hardest part was deciding to make the documentary.

He admitted. A confession that was consistent with the reserved nature that had always characterized him both on and off the track.

However, the result seems to precisely address the need to explain who Rafa Nadal is beyond the sports legend. Netflix tells the story of the champion, but also that of the son, the husband, the friend, and the Mallorcan who never lost his connection to his homeland. Because for Nadal, the island is not just a geographical location; it is a way of understanding life.

There is something profoundly Balearic in this loyalty to his loved ones, in the calm with which he speaks of his family, and in the way he continues to find balance far from the major centers of world sport. In the documentary, Mallorca is presented as a place of authenticity, far from the frenetic pace of the circuit and connected to an almost antiquated idea of success: winning everything while staying true to where you come from.

Perhaps that’s why Christmas continues to touch a special chord with the people of the Balearic Islands. Not only for his historic victories or for having carried the name of Mallorca to every corner of the world, but because he has never broken the invisible bond that ties him to the island. Even now, in this new chapter of his life, he continues to speak of Mallorca not as a symbol, but as a home.

And as the documentary prepares to reach millions of viewers around the world, the image that endures is not of an epic final, nor of a trophy raised to the sky. It is of a serene Rafa Nadal, contemplating the island that had always been there, waiting for his return.
