Puerto Portals has taken the first step to organize a new edition of the Blue Marina Clean-Up Subaquatic, an environmental cleanup and awareness initiative that will take place on September 19. A team of divers has already conducted an initial reconnaissance dive to inspect the seabed, identify accumulated debris, and assess which items can be removed during the event.
This preliminary work is crucial for planning an operation that, beyond a one-time cleanup, aims to highlight a problem that remains out of sight from the ground. The survey has allowed us to pre-assess the condition of the seabed and determine the technical, logistical, and human resources necessary to carry out the removal tasks with the utmost safety.
During the dive, the specialists observed the presence of debris and large objects on the seabed surface, revealing a reality that normally remains hidden from those who enjoy the coast from above. Locating and assessing these materials will allow them to set priorities and organize the day’s work more efficiently.
The latest edition of the Blue Marina Clean-Up underwater cleanup will be organized in collaboration with Protemar, Mar de Fondo, and Big Blue Diving, organizations that will participate in inspection, removal, and awareness-raising activities. The goal is to combine direct action to protect the marine environment with greater awareness of the need to preserve ecosystems that are especially sensitive and strategic for the coast of Mallorca.
The initiative will be based on the work carried out last year, when the operation allowed for the removal of more than 3,100 kilos of waste from the sea. Among the recovered items was a sunken boat seven meters long and weighing about 2,600 kilograms – an operation that illustrates the scope of some of the debris that can accumulate on the seabed.
With this new initiative, Puerto Portals reinforces its commitment to integrating environmental management into port operations and making marine cleanup a regular, coordinated, and measurable activity. This strategy goes beyond the occasional removal of debris and moves toward a coastal management model in which marine conservation plays an increasingly important role.
