Palma wants the Feast of Our Lady of Health to continue growing. On Friday, the Palma City Council presented the lineup for the second edition of the major concert organized to commemorate the patron saint’s feast, an event that this year once again combines international artists with the talent of the local music scene. The lineup will be headlined by John Newman and Rudimental, two leading figures in contemporary British music, who will be joined by local artists Freenipples, Alex Losa, Isaac Indart, and Lady Gosya. The goal is to replicate the success of the first edition, which managed to transform the Parc de la Mar area into one of the city’s main musical hubs.
Lourdes Roca, the Councillor for Citizen Participation of Cort, has announced that the concert will take place on September 5th at Parc de la Mar, with free admission and a program that will run from 7:00 PM until 2:00 AM the next day. Thus, the format retains one of its main attractions: a large concert open to the public in a prime Palma location, but with a program designed to attract both residents and visitors.
The organizers will once again close the Boardwalk to traffic for the event and will implement specific measures to ensure everything runs smoothly. Glass containers will not be permitted on the premises, and food trucks will be set up to offer a variety of culinary options throughout the evening. There will also be an accessible area for people with limited mobility. The figures from the first edition explain the City Council’s commitment to continuing with this format. More than 32,000 people attended last year, in an event that, as Roca noted, took place “without incident” and in a “pleasant atmosphere.”
For the councilor, this result demonstrates that the format “works” and is an “undisputed success.” The challenge for this second edition will therefore be to turn an experience that served as a pilot project into a permanent event on Palma’s festive calendar. Roca also emphasized the need for the patron saint festivities to “recover their rightful place” and “take root” among the people of Palma, following the example of other city celebrations like the Sant Sebastià festivities.
The objective: to sneak onto the European circuit
This leap in ambition is also evident in the musical program. Miki Jaume, director of Grup Trui, has stated that “Palma is ready for major musical events” and recalled that the first edition “exceeded expectations.” This year’s goal is not simply to repeat this formula, but to take it to the next level. According to Jaume, the program has been designed to “go a step further” and reach a wider audience.
The ambition is even greater: to ensure that Palma becomes part of the ‘circuit of major European cultural events,’ leveraging the city’s ability to host major spectacles without compromising its own identity. Because therein probably lies the real challenge of this second edition: ensuring that artists like John Newman or Rudimental attract an international audience without the Mare de Déu de la Salut ceasing to be the heart of the celebrations.
With free admission, a seaside stage, and a lineup that includes a mix of international stars and local artists, Palma is once again adopting a formula that aims to transform a traditional festival into a cultural and musical experience with the ambition of becoming a flagship event. The event will take place on September 5.
