Once again this year, the lack of a coastline will not prevent Madrid from becoming the capital of naval activity. From September 19 to 26, the city will host the 16th edition of Madrid Naval Week. The initiative, organized by the Navy, aims primarily to bring the institution closer to the public, highlight Spain’s maritime dimension, and help raise awareness of its importance for the security and well-being of all Spaniards.
Under the slogan “Spain’s future lies at sea. The Navy responds,” the program includes all kinds of activities for the whole family. We recommend keeping an eye on social media and the Navy’s official website so you don’t miss a thing.
On September 19 and 20 (from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.), Retiro Park will host an exhibition of Marine Corps equipment and demonstrations of their capabilities. The demonstrations taking place at the pond will be particularly spectacular: a canine demonstration (12:00–12:30 and 18:00–18:30), a hydrographic demonstration (11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m.), and a free obstacle course for children.
For its part, the Naval Museum will host a series of family-friendly activities on September 19, 20, and 26, organized by the Institute of Naval History and Culture and designed to introduce maritime traditions to young people.
Strategic Discussion and Academic Sessions
The academic component takes center stage in this edition. From September 21 to 25, the Royal Naval Institute and Observatory will host an Astronomical Navigation Seminar (5:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m.) at the Naval War College, aimed at specialists and students interested in traditional and cutting-edge methods of maritime navigation.
On the 22nd, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Navy Headquarters will host a Strategy Seminar under the theme “Connected Seabed: Technology, Deterrence, and Resilience in National Maritime Security.” And on the 23rd, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:40 p.m., a technical conference dedicated to innovation and technological sovereignty will take place at the Navy’s Logistics Support Command under the title “The Indo-Pacific Factor,” focusing on the geostrategic impact of that region on global maritime security.
Armada Awards Gala and Concerts
On September 24, at 8:00 p.m., the Armada Awards Gala will be held at the Armada sports facilities in Madrid to honor individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves for their work in promoting the values of maritime culture and national defense.
Music will also have its place: on September 19, at 7:00 p.m., the Music Unit of the Madrid Marine Corps Band will give a concert at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid, and on September 25, it will perform again at the Gardens of the Palacio de Oriente.
Vertical Challenge, Naval Race, and Flag-Raising Ceremony to Close Out the Week
The week wraps up on September 26 with several notable events. At 11:00 a.m., Madrid Río will host a flag-raising ceremony for civilian personnel, a solemn event open to all citizens who wish to participate. At 8:30 p.m., the Moncloa Lighthouse will be the setting for the premiere of the Vertical Challenge, a new event organized by the Navy’s Central Board of Physical Education and Sports in collaboration with the Ecodeporte Sports Club, which will consist of climbing Madrid’s iconic lighthouse; this is this year’s Naval Race.
The organizers aim to highlight how an essential part of daily life depends on the sea and the security of maritime spaces: trade and energy routes, submarine cables, interconnections, and other critical infrastructure are fundamental to the country’s communications, economy, and well-being. As the State’s representative at sea, the Navy contributes to the protection of these interests through presence, surveillance, prevention, and deterrence, in close collaboration with other government agencies, partners, and allies.
