Lürssen, the German superyacht builder known for constructing some of the world’s largest recreational vessels, is no stranger to superlatives. But describing the number, size, and diversity of the superyachts it has delivered this year might require an entirely new vocabulary.
In fact, Lürssen has delivered no fewer than six fully custom-built, one-of-a-kind superyachts—of astonishing complexity, immense size, and high cost (ODISEA, DEEP BLUE, BOARDWALK, O3, NAUSICAÄ, and NIXIE)—all in the same year. Together, they represent one of the most diverse collections of yachts ever delivered by a single shipyard in a single fiscal year.
“Our role is to create the environment, the experience, and the engineering capabilities necessary to bring ideas to life,” says Peter Lürssen. “Delivering six yachts in a single year is an extraordinary achievement, and the commitment of everyone involved deserves tremendous recognition. Engineering is a balance between technical expertise and creativity, and the diversity of this year’s deliveries demonstrates that perfectly.”
This year’s new Lürssen yachts range in length from 75 to 140 meters. And this is where the superlatives come into play once again: it takes about four years of disciplined work and rigorous project management to coordinate the hundreds of thousands of manufacturing hours required to bring each vessel to life. That a single shipyard can do all this simultaneously with six superyachts and deliver them all in the same year is simply astonishing.
NIXIE is the new yacht that Lürssen will be showcasing at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month. The yacht features a fluid and informal flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as a pool nearly six meters wide located so far aft that it extends beyond the swim platform. It also features a custom-built transom hatch with a Z-shaped hydraulic system that, when opened, lies completely flush with the deck and reveals a spacious beach club.
NIXIE also features a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, supported by an advanced energy storage system, which enables efficient operation across a wide range of navigation profiles. This architecture provides maximum comfort on board thanks to reduced noise and vibration.
Beyond the engine room, new solutions were designed to address a wide range of needs. The O3 is built for extreme conditions, with equipment tailored for expeditions and the amenities necessary to ensure comfort over long periods of time.
ODISEA reinvents the traditional living room, enclosing it almost entirely in full-height structural glass to create a sophisticated, contemporary beach house that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The futuristic design of NAUSICAÄ, the work of Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, features a thick glass band that wraps around the entire guest deck, as well as a large glass skylight (Skydome) on the upper deck. The yacht also features a spacious atrium that replaces the traditional main salon, conceived as a multifunctional, double-height gallery-style space.
In stark contrast to NAUSICAÄ is the more traditional BOARDWALK, whose design required a level of discreet engineering that had to be as seamless as its own aesthetics. The yacht also features a first for Lürssen: a sliding hatch and a retractable staircase on the main deck.
“I’m in a privileged position to see what’s coming next,” says Michael Breman, senior director of sales at Lürssen. “The Lürssen machine never stops. Every conversation with a new or long-standing client always starts with a blank canvas. It’s exciting. No two owners envision the same future, and no two Lürssen yachts should ever be the same. That’s what keeps us looking ahead. Every project is an opportunity to push the boundaries a little further.”
Pushing the boundaries even further, indeed.
