The second edition of the Magaluf Half Marathon has established itself as one of the main drivers of economic and tourist activity in Calvià. This year, the event attracted 3,325 visitors and generated an estimated economic impact of 1.8 million euros, according to the socioeconomic impact study conducted by the Calvià 365 Foundation in collaboration with the University of Córdoba.
The report, based on an analysis of 528 questionnaires filled out by participants, companions, and other stakeholders, highlights the event’s growing ability to attract visitors and boost the local economy. One of the most notable indicators is the return on public and private investment, which exceeded €23 in economic impact for every €1 invested in organizing the competition – a figure that demonstrates the event’s high economic return.
The event attracted 3,325 visitors, including runners and their companions. Of these, 1,351 attended only on race day, while 1,974 extended their stay in the town by at least one night, reinforcing Magaluf’s appeal as a sports tourism destination.
The accommodation brings together the benefits
Regarding accommodation, 755 visitors chose hotels, with an average stay of 3.65 nights, while 186 stayed in vacation apartments for an average of 2.75 nights. Additionally, 33 participants opted to stay with family or friends, with an average stay of 3.5 nights. In total, the event generated 7,029 overnight stays, a figure that helped boost tourism during a key period for the destination.
The greatest economic benefit was concentrated in the accommodation sector, where hotels and vacation apartments accounted for about 630,000 euros, equivalent to 35% of the total impact. The hospitality and restaurant sectors recorded an impact of €456,000 (26%), while local retail—including shops, small businesses, and supermarkets—accounted for spending of about €282,000 (16%). These figures reflect how the impact of the Magaluf Half Marathon goes beyond the sporting realm to become an engine for cross-sectoral activity, with direct effects on some of the municipality’s key economic sectors.
