The rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, without a doubt, belongs to the second category. That’s why the Swiss player’s recent visit to the Rafa Nadal Academy held a significance that goes far beyond a simple visit to a museum.
Federer has just returned to the Manacor complex to visit the new Rafa Nadal Museum, a completely renovated space that invites visitors to explore the Spanish champion’s career through immersive experiences, original objects, audiovisual content, and some of the most iconic moments from a career that defined an era in world tennis. The visit took place almost a year after his last visit to the Academy and nearly a decade after he attended its official opening in 2016. On this occasion, Rafa Nadal was unable to join him, although Federer was guided during the visit by Sebastián Nadal, Gustavo Marcaccio, Technical Director of the Rafa Nadal Academy, and Gonzalo Pérez, Head of the Rafa Nadal Museum.
The space dedicated to the Big 3
One of the highlights of the visit was in the room dedicated to the so-called ‘Big 3,‘ one of the central areas of the new exhibition tour. It features personal items loaned by Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, and the third member of the ‘Big 3’ – the greatest players in the history of tennis – Novak Djokovic. It also includes exclusive audiovisual content in which the three reflect, from a personal perspective, on how they lived one of the greatest rivalries in sports history and the legacy they built together over more than two decades.
At the end of the visit, Federer did not hide his admiration for the result of the renovation. “It’s wonderful to see it all. It’s beautiful. There’s an enormous amount of work behind it, but above all, it’s very exciting,” he said. The former Swiss tennis player also recalled the original museum and highlighted the transformation of the space. “I remember what it was like in the beginning, but now it’s truly spectacular. It’s beautiful; it’s very well done. It’s a very special place. Congratulations to the whole team. I’ve already told them personally: you’ve done a fantastic job,” he said.
Immersive experience
The renovation of the Rafa Nadal Museum aims to go beyond a typical collection of trophies or memorabilia. The new exhibition, which Roger Federer was able to experience in person, offers an immersive experience that allows visitors to understand the Mallorcan’s sporting and personal development through technology, large audiovisual screens, interactive elements, and objects that help contextualize one of the most successful careers in contemporary sports. The narrative focuses on both his achievements and the values—effort, resilience, and humility—that have defined his path both on and off the court. In this way, it seeks to reconcile life and sport, drawing a parallel between the inner strengths that guide a person both in their competitive performance in elite sport and throughout their life experience.
Federer’s presence on this stage also serves as a reminder that his relationship with Nadal goes beyond the historic head-to-head rivalry they enjoyed for years. Between 2004 and 2019, they played 40 official matches that helped elevate tennis to a new level and defined one of the sport’s brightest eras. Over time, this rivalry gave way to a friendship that is now part of their shared legacy, a bond that was immortalized during Federer’s emotional farewell at the Laver Cup and now finds a new chapter in the museum celebrating the career of the man who was, for so many years, a legendary rival. The same legend in which the two will always go hand in hand.
