Mallorca will host its first water bike competition on June 14 at the Parc de la Mar in Palma. The 1st Water Bike Circuit was presented this Wednesday by Pedro Bestard, the Consell de Mallorca’s Minister of Environment, Natural Resources, and Sports.
According to a statement released by the island’s government, the event will consist of a series of challenges that participants must complete in the shortest time possible.
They are designed to promote the practice of a new sport that combines cycling and canoeing among the general population of Mallorca.
The event will be open to participants of all ages, starting at 12 years old or 1.50 meters in height, and will be held in five different categories: master, adult, cadet, junior, and promotional.
To launch the event, organizers held a workshop as part of the ‘Súma’t’ water bike program at the Sa Ràpita Yacht Club with a group of about a hundred students, who were also joined by two guest athletes who gave a demonstration: cyclist Lluís Mas and canoeist Joan Toni Moreno.
“We are already offering this new activity to senior citizens and young people, as we are seeing today in this workshop here in Sa Ràpita, as a recreational-sports session that allows participants to engage in sports, cardio, and toning, but also to relax while enjoying the scenery,” said Bestard.
The launch event was also attended by the president of the Balearic Islands Cycling Federation, Toni Bauçà, and the technical director and manager of the Balearic Canoeing Federation, Xavi Marroig, both of which are partners in the initiative.
