Mikel Arteta (44, Donostia-San Sebastián) is at one of the most pivotal moments of his career. The Arsenal manager is on the verge of restoring the London club to glory after securing a spot in the Champions League final last Wednesday by eliminating Atlético Madrid, leading the club to its second European final this century—twenty years after the 2006 final against Barcelona. In addition, Arsenal continues to fight for a Premier League title it hasn’t won in over two decades, confirming the Basque coach’s excellent work at the helm of the Gunners. And of course, all this great work as a coach must be rewarded—or at least, he deserves a break. For this reason, Arteta always has his retreat in Portal Nous, Mallorca, in mind, where the Basque coach leaves the intensity of the Emirates Stadium behind and makes rest and tranquility his starting lineup.

Beyond the holidays

This exclusive resort, located in the municipality of Calvià and just ten kilometers from Palma, has become a regular getaway for Arteta and his family. He spends extended periods there with his wife, Lorena Bernal, and their three children, Gabriel, Daniel, and Oliver. The family’s connection to the island goes far beyond a simple vacation, as two of their children were even born in Mallorca.

Lorena Bernal has spoken on several occasions about the special affection she feels for this corner of the Mediterranean. In fact, when the couple received the 2023 Mallorquines de Verano Award, she said that Mallorca is “one of my homes” and the place where she feels she has put down roots. The couple also chose the island to celebrate their wedding in 2010, further strengthening their bond with the area.

The charm of Portal Nous

Portals Nous stands out for its combination of tranquility and exclusivity. Its most iconic feature is Puerto Portals, considered one of the most prestigious marinas in the Mediterranean, frequented by the ultra-wealthy, celebrities, and members of the international aristocracy. Even so, the town retains a relaxed, residential atmosphere that attracts families from various European countries.

This town on Mallorca is also renowned for its beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sand. Among the best-known are Oratori Beach, next to the marina, and Cala Bendinat, a more sheltered and peaceful spot that’s ideal for swimming. In addition, the area offers a wide range of leisure activities, from hiking trails and golf courses to visits to Marineland, one of the most popular attractions in the area.

Nestled among the hills of Portals Nous is the Portals Chapel, built in 1865 by architect Antoni Sureda Villalonga. This historic site reflects the contrast that defines the town: a place where the tranquility of a Mediterranean village coexists with the luxury of one of Mallorca’s most exclusive destinations. For Arteta, that balance has become the perfect refuge away from the demands of elite soccer.
