Why Rafa Nadal's signing with Real Madrid Could Be a Brilliant Move by Florentino Pérez

The president of Real Madrid wants to bring onto his board of directors a 40-year-old figure who is internationally recognized, deeply connected to Real Madrid, and has business experience.

There are athletes who, when they retire, leave behind a career. Rafa Nadal has built something that goes far beyond that: an international brand, a business structure, and a reputation that transcends tennis. Now, that athletic and business legacy can take a new step forward within one of the most powerful institutions in world sports: Real Madrid.

Florentino Pérez’s decision to nominate the former tennis player as a member of the Board of Directors is no ordinary appointment. At 40 years old, Nadal brings a combination of qualities that is particularly valuable to Real Madrid: he is a sports legend, a well-known Real Madrid fan, an internationally respected figure, and a businessman with experience in projects related to sports, tourism, and investment. He brings not only prestige but also a perspective that goes beyond soccer.

The move was announced on Wednesday, after Real Madrid’s Board of Directors agreed to submit his appointment for ratification by the General Assembly of Delegated Members. The vote is scheduled for November 21. Nadal, member number 67,778 and an honorary member of the club, has accepted Florentino Pérez’s proposal, although his appointment still requires approval from the members.

A figure who transcends sports

The first advantage for Real Madrid is the international reach of its name. Nadal retired from professional tennis in November 2024 after building one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the sport: 92 singles titles, 22 Grand Slams, two Olympic gold medals, and five Davis Cups with Spain. He also reached the No. 1 spot in the world rankings.

His career has made him a recognizable figure in a wide variety of markets and a role model for several generations. For an organization that also competes for audiences, sponsors, and international prominence, having a personality of that caliber within its institutional structure is a reputational asset.

But it’s not just a matter of popularity. Nadal has built a public image associated with hard work, perseverance, competitiveness, and the ability to overcome adversity. These are attributes that align with the identity Real Madrid projects and that the club has specifically highlighted in its statement. The former tennis player has never hidden his fondness for the team and has maintained a close relationship with Florentino Pérez. His appointment allows the president to bring someone onto the board who doesn’t need to build a connection with the fans from scratch—that connection is already part of his history.

A Younger Roster for Real Madrid’s Future

There is another factor that does not go unnoticed: age. At 40, Nadal represents a different generation than Florentino Pérez, who is 79 and has just begun a new four-year term. His appointment may help bring a generational perspective to the club’s leadership, although no announcement has been made that would allow this move to be interpreted as the naming of a successor.

The possibility that Nadal might one day take on a more prominent institutional role at Real Madrid has come up on several occasions in public debate. However, the former tennis player himself has avoided fueling that speculation. What is on the table now is his appointment to the Board of Directors, pending ratification by the members.

The entrepreneur who has built his business from Mallorca

Nadal’s business ventures offer another explanation for Florentino Pérez’s interest. The former tennis player has not limited his activities to the prizes he won during his professional career or to the advertising contracts associated with his image. He has developed a business structure with interests in various sectors, all centered on a very clear starting point: Manacor, his hometown in Mallorca.

That is where one of his best-known projects is located: the Rafa Nadal Academy, a sports and educational complex that has turned his experience as a tennis player into a business with an international focus. The center combines sports training, academic programs, housing, and other tennis-related services. What began as a personal venture in his homeland has evolved into a platform that aims to bring the academy’s model to other markets.

The expansion is no longer limited to Mallorca. Through International Tennis Academies, Nadal has spearheaded the development of sports centers outside the original Manacor complex, with locations in countries and territories such as Kuwait, Mexico, Greece, Hong Kong, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil.

The economic aspect of this structure is also significant. Aspemir, the family-owned holding company through which a large portion of its investments are channeled, comprises about twenty companies. In 2024, it reported 41.9 million euros in revenue and 14.5 million in profit, according to information published by Cinco Días.

Mallorca has also served as the setting for other initiatives. In the tourism sector, one notable example is his partnership with Meliá to develop ZEL, a hotel brand launched in 2022 that combines the Mediterranean lifestyle with a vacation accommodation concept. Its first property opened in Mallorca in 2023. The island, therefore, is not only the place where Nadal was born and trained as an athlete—it is also one of the places from which he has built his business empire.

Through its various companies and partnerships, its interests have also expanded into real estate, the restaurant industry, and investments.

What Does Florentino Pérez Stand to Gain from Nadal?

This addition brings together several elements that can reinforce one another. Nadal is a well-known and beloved figure among a large portion of the fan base; he has an international profile, understands how business projects work, and has a longstanding relationship with the club. For Florentino Pérez, bringing in someone with that profile can broaden the range of experiences within the Board of Directors.

His expertise comes from a sport other than soccer, but from an equally global industry, in which brand management, sponsorships, talent development, and international expansion are becoming increasingly important. This perspective can be useful for an organization that no longer competes solely for titles, but also for its economic, commercial, and institutional standing in the global sports world.

Nadal himself has thanked Florentino Pérez and the rest of the Board of Directors for the offer and has stated that he accepts it “with great enthusiasm, a desire to learn, and a willingness to contribute as much as I can.” For now, the club has not specified what specific responsibilities he will assume within the governing body.

The true impact of his arrival will become clear once his role is defined and he begins to participate in the club’s decision-making. In this case, the signing isn’t measured in goals or titles. It’s about bringing in a figure capable of adding value to an institution that also plays a role off the field.
