On Thursday, the Council of Mallorca inaugurated the new exhibition project at the Krekovic Museum, which marks the first update in a decade to the permanent collection dedicated to Kristian Krekovic and the exhibition of foreign artists associated with the island throughout the 20th century.

The event brought together institutional and professional representatives from the cultural sector for a day that marked the opening of the new exhibition project to the public, according to a statement issued by the island institution.

“This renovation restores the Krekovic Museum to its rightful place: a vibrant space, connected to the Llevant neighborhood and the cultural history of Mallorca. It restores the vitality of the Krekovic and, at the same time, highlights the presence of international artists who have left their mark on the island,” said the island’s Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca.

The new permanent collection features 22 works that highlight the career of the Bosnian painter based in Mallorca. At the same time, the exhibition of international artists brings together works by creators such as Tito Cittadini, Roberto Ramaugé, George Sheridan, Mati Klarwein, William Edwards Cook, Erzsébet Ringer, Ernest Curiel, Médard Verburgh, Eugene Holbrook, Richt Miller, Ellis Jacobson, and Steve Afif, among others.

During the opening ceremony, the first KrekoArt Prize was awarded; this biannual competition, organized for the first time by the island’s cultural institution, selects a mural for the museum’s main façade.

The jury has awarded the prize to the artist Oriol Angrill Jordà for his proposal ‘Memoria de marès: El rostro de Krekovic’, a project that combines hyperrealism with references to Mallorcan identity.

“The KrekoArt Prize was created with the aim of promoting contemporary art and opening the museum to new perspectives. Oriol Angrill’s work is an excellent example of this approach,” said Roca.
