IbizaPreservation presented its 2025 Annual Report on Wednesday at the Ocean Drive Ibiza hotel in Botafoch, in an event that began with an emotional video showcasing the scenic, cultural, and natural richness of Ibiza and Formentera. During the last fiscal year, the organization allocated €701,000 to environmental programs and projects, a 12% increase over 2024. This investment represents 82% of a total budget of €853,000, the highest in the organization’s history. As explained by Executive Director Inma Saranova, Ibiza and Formentera face growing pressure on their natural resources, even as their citizens become increasingly committed to sustainability. In this context, she defended the foundation’s role as a facilitator of “solid, measurable, and useful” environmental initiatives.
The organization managed a total of 20 projects in five strategic areas – Terrestrial Biodiversity, Marine Protection, Circular Economy, Product of Ibiza and Formentera, and the Observatory of Sustainability – and strengthened initiatives such as the 2025 Marine Forum, which brought together international experts and concluded with a consensus document outlining 26 technical measures for the protection of the Balearic Sea. It also expanded the Gastronomic Activists program, focused on reducing food waste through workshops and training for industry professionals. In the economic sphere, funding came mainly from fundraising events (€195,000), individual donations and corporate collaborations (€153,000 each), the Checkout Giving initiative (€133,000), public contributions (€102,000), and private foundations (€35,000).
Sauropsids, sharks and rays
Among the most notable initiatives was the strengthening of the Pitiüses lizard conservation program, which increased the number of traps installed to control invasive snakes from 280 to 350 active devices. Thanks to this measure, 584 invasive specimens were removed during 2025. Additionally, the ‘Eivissa and Formentera Sembren Futur’ project resulted in the planting of 1,350 fruit trees across 25 farms on both islands, contributing to the restoration of the rural landscape and strengthening the primary sector.
Marine conservation continued to be another of IbizaPreservation’s priorities. The foundation continued to support the study of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows in Talamanca and Cala Vedella, the results of which continue to highlight significant degradation caused by boat anchoring, pollution, and rising water temperatures. Research on sharks and rays using environmental DNA techniques, conducted in collaboration with GEN-GOB and the University of Oviedo, also continued. This has allowed for the identification of eight species of elasmobranchs in the waters of Ibiza and Formentera, including the manta ray and the spiny skate.
Other initiatives
Among the new initiatives launched in 2025, the following stand out: the Sembra Futur Forum, aimed at bringing the primary sector closer to young people and fostering generational succession in rural areas; the ‘Tejiendo Futuro: a Alliance for the Preservation of the Balearic Islands’ project, with the support of the band Depeche Mode to investigate marine plastic pollution; and the IbizaPreservation Classroom on Blue Crime, created in collaboration with Jaume I University to combat marine environmental crimes through research, education, and the legal sector. A digital and trilingual toolkit was also developed to raise public awareness about the protection of the Pitiüses sand lizard.
In financial terms, the organization raised €772,000 in 2025, 8% less than the previous year, thanks to fundraising events, private donations, corporate partnerships, the Checkout Giving initiative, and public and private contributions. Despite this decrease, the foundation decided to partially draw on its reserves to ensure the continuity of strategic projects and launch new initiatives.
All for the Pitusas
During the presentation, Vice President and co-founder Serena Cook highlighted the organization’s development since its creation in 2008, emphasizing that IbizaPreservation is now a stronger, more specialized organization with close ties to the local area.
