A total of 63 companies in the Balearic Islands have joined the Sustainable Local Industry initiative managed by the Regional Development Agency (ADR Baleares), committing to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Regional Ministry of Business, Self-Employed Workers, and Energy highlighted in a press release that these industrial companies have grown by 100 percent over the past three years.
The Sustainable Local Industry (ILS) seal identifies and highlights industries in the Balearic Islands that are committed to the environment, calculate their greenhouse gas emissions, and commit to reducing them.
The goal of the initiative is to provide tools and pave the way for the industrial sector to become more economically and energetically efficient, and to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
ILS companies also receive benefits in grant programs administered by the General Directorates of Industry and Industrial Parks and of Circular Economy, Energy Transition, and Climate Change, as well as visibility through the website www.industrialocalsostenible.es, where members can be found.
This digital platform also serves as an information hub for all industries to stay up to date on the latest developments regarding regulations, laws, research, and proposals to combat the effects of climate change.
For their part, companies wishing to join ILS must be subject to the industrial IAE tax and have their registered office in the Balearic Islands. Additionally, they must have an active production line on the islands.
Once they have joined the initiative, they must complete an online training course on carbon footprints to learn the basic and fundamental concepts for calculating and managing them in the industry.
Finally, they must have calculated their greenhouse gas emissions and commit to implementing a plan to reduce them.
Membership in the program is reviewed every two years, at which time companies must submit a new calculation demonstrating a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
As highlighted by the Regional Ministry, to facilitate participation in the ILS, ADR Baleares subsidizes carbon footprint calculations through the “Ibsostenibilidad” line of the Consulting Vouchers program.
With this assistance, companies receive between 18 and 60 hours of consulting services to identify and calculate greenhouse gas emissions and issue reports verifying their corporate carbon footprint. A total of 41 companies have applied for the subsidy in 2026.
