With the countdown to the official start of the 44th MAPFRE Copa del Rey in full swing, the Royal Yacht Club of Palma is living the final hours before more than a hundred boats begin competing for one of the most coveted titles on the international sailing calendar. On land, the focus is on the organizers; on the water, the teams are finalizing every detail, aware that in a regatta of this caliber, the differences are often measured in seconds.
The organizational machinery is running at full capacity. The Race Office is managing the final stages of the crew accreditation process without any hitches. “Registration is now 89 percent complete and, so far, we haven’t found any problems,” explains Rocío Lozano, head of the Race Office. The validation of federation licenses, measurement certificates, and insurance policies is the final step before giving the final approval to each boat.
Meanwhile, the docks and the race course have become a high-performance testing ground. Technical inspections have confirmed compliance with ORC regulations, and the teams have made the most of the day to complete free practice sessions, test different configurations, and precisely fine-tune their boats. Each maneuver serves to gather information ahead of the start of the official training sessions, scheduled for this Monday.
Echegoyen’s debut as a patron
In the world of sports, one of the stories that will capture attention this week is that of Támara Echegoyen. The Olympic champion is taking the next step in her career and will make her debut as skipper at the MAPFRE King’s Cup at the helm of Rodrigo Sanz’s Beso Beach, one of the most promising entries in the Uber ORC B class.
The category promises to be one of the most contested of the event. Among its main rivals will be the Teatro del Soho San Miguel, led by Javier Banderas and with two-time Olympic medalist Luis Doreste on board. Both teams will compete with the new XR-41, a design that has already proven its potential by winning the last PalmaVela, held precisely in the waters where this week the title will be decided.
“It’s going to be a very demanding week. The forecasts call for light winds – conditions in which every decision and every little detail can make all the difference. Moreover, the fleet is very competitive, so it will be vital to stay consistent, avoid mistakes, and reach the final day still with a shot at the title,” says Echegoyen.
But the MAPFRE King’s Cup has long transcended the realm of sports competition. The event has established itself as a meeting point for the nautical industry, the biggest names in sailing, and a social and cultural program that extends its reach far beyond the sea. In keeping with this spirit, the Royal Yacht Club of Palma is hosting a preview screening of *Cáscara de Nuez*, the new documentary by Miguel Ángel Tobías, this Sunday evening. The screening, which has been completely sold out for days, confirms that this major sailing event is also enjoyed off the water.
