The works at Palma Airport are "almost finished"

An airplane takes off from Palma Airport in Palma de Mallorca.

The works at Palma Airport are in their final stages and are “almost finished,” according to a statement made by Aena to the Confederation of Business Associations of the Balearic Islands (CAEB) in a meeting on Friday.

The president of the business association, Carmen Planas, met with a delegation from Aena led by its executive vice president, Javier Marín, the Director General of Airports, Elena Mayoral, and the director of Son Sant Joan, Tomás Melgar.

The objective was to provide an update on the progress of the works at Palma Airport, as well as on the planned projects for the airports of Menorca and Ibiza.

According to a press release issued by the CAEB, the works at Palma airport are in their final stages and are “nearly completed,” following a €600 million investment by Aena.

Modernization, facility upgrades, and investment in technological equipment will be rolled out over the next few years at the other two airports in the Balearic Islands, where the airport authority plans to invest around €400 million over the five-year period from 2027 to 2031.

“This is good news,” said Planas, who at the meeting was accompanied by the vice president of the CAEB, Rafael Roig, and the vice president of the Hotel Enterprise Federation of Mallorca (FEHM), María José Aguiló.

During the meeting, the business organization conveyed to Aena the need to “improve management, especially air traffic flows,” in order to “avoid the feeling of congestion that airports experience during peak hours and thus advance towards the sustainability goal to which the Balearic Islands are committed.”

The Vice President of Aena has stated that, just like the work done in Palma, the projects planned for Menorca and Ibiza are in response to the need to “expand and modernize the facilities; in no case to increase the number of flights.”

Planas emphasized that the meeting is part of the talks that began last summer to improve communication about the projects planned by the airport authority as “essential infrastructure for the Balearic Islands.”
