The General Directorate of Culture of the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports and the Baleària Foundation unveiled this Friday, on the occasion of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, the sculpture 'Posidònia' by Valencian artist Juan Carlos Nadal, which invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of marine ecosystems.

The sculpture is located in the courtyard of the Ca n'Oleo building, headquarters of the General Directorate of Culture, and will be on display until September 5, 2026.

The event was attended by the Regional Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, Jaume Bauzá; the Regional Secretary of Culture and Sports, Pedro Vidal; Maribel Pérez of the Baleària Foundation; and the artist behind the work, Juan Carlos Nadal.

As highlighted by the Regional Ministry in a press release, the event underscores the institutional commitment to contemporary culture and environmental awareness through art.

The work, created between 2024 and 2025, is a large-scale sculpture made of enamel on aluminum and centers on Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant endemic to the Mediterranean, considered essential for the ecological balance of our sea.

Through this piece, Nadal invites reflection on the relationship between humans and nature, as well as on the fragility of marine ecosystems in the face of the impact of human activity.

Posidonia, considered one of the longest-living organisms on the planet, plays a fundamental role in oxygen production, CO2 absorption, coastal protection, and the conservation of marine biodiversity.

According to the artist, the work explores “the interaction between the organic and the fluid, movement and stillness, what is primitive and visceral, with the aim of creating a sensory experience that fosters a deeper awareness of the continuity and preservation of the natural environment.

The initiative is supported by the Baleària Foundation, which has exhibited this work at the Dénia ferry terminal, and is part of the shared efforts between contemporary art and the environmental conservation policies promoted by the regional government.

The Regional Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, Jaume Bauzá, emphasized that culture is an extraordinary tool for raising awareness and fostering shared values.

"This work by Juan Carlos Nadal reminds us of the importance of preserving one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable natural treasures: Posidonia oceanica, an essential element for the health of our marine ecosystems," the minister concluded.
