The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment

has received the first of six new vessels acquired to strengthen monitoring, tracking, and conservation efforts for marine biodiversity. The Ministry highlighted this in a press release, explaining that four of these vessels will be assigned to environmental agents.

This acquisition, funded with European funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan

, represents a total investment of over one million euros and is part of the Marine Conservation Plan recently presented by the Regional Government.

The new vessels will be used for professional purposes and will support environmental monitoring and management activities along the coast, in marine protected areas, and in other areas of high ecological value.

These are modern vessels, enclosed and equipped with advanced technology—including infrared observation and surveillance systems—that will improve the operational capacity of environmental officers in their daily work at sea.

The Director General of Environment and Forest Management, Anna Torres

, highlighted that the delivery of this first vessel "represents an important step in modernizing the monitoring capabilities for the marine environment of the Balearic Islands."

"Effective protection of the marine environment requires planning, resources, and the ability to act on the ground, and this investment allows us to equip environmental agents with more modern, safe, and efficient tools," she emphasized.

According to Torres, this initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Regional Government to strengthen marine conservation, improve the monitoring of protected areas, and ensure more effective management of our coastal and marine ecosystems.

In this regard, he noted that the islands possess a first-class marine natural heritage and, therefore, "protecting it is a shared responsibility that requires adequate resources and an effective presence at sea."

Similarly, four of the vessels will be assigned to

the ports of Sóller and La Colònia de Sant Pere in Mallorca; Fornells in Menorca; and Sant Antoni de Portmany in Ibiza.

The two remaining vessels, along with their respective trailers, will be assigned to the S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park in Menorca and the Ses Salines de Eivissa i Formentera Natural Park.

This renewal of resources will improve the response capacity of environmental agents in marine surveillance activities, support the management of protected areas, strengthen environmental monitoring, and promote actions related to biodiversity conservation.

It also strengthens the regional government's presence at sea and contributes to a more sustainable management of coastal uses in the Balearic Islands, the Regional Ministry has highlighted.
