The proposal for the regeneration of the Torrenova headland area (Magaluf, Calvià) has been selected as one of the sites participating in EUROPAN 19, the latest edition of the international architecture competition for architects under 40.

The Regional Government presented the proposal in collaboration with the Calvià City Council, which owns the land and is responsible for implementing the future project, according to a statement issued by the Regional Ministry of Housing, Land Planning and Mobility.

The selection was confirmed on Tuesday during the meeting of the EUROPAN Spain National Committee, which was attended by José Francisco Reynés, the regional government’s Director General of Housing and Architecture.

Award-winning renovations

The proposal covers two areas. The first is the Torrenova headland, which is part of the urban fabric of Magaluf and, once transferred to public hands, offers the opportunity to create a green and civic corridor in this area. The second is the area around the former Hotel Teix, which the City Council demolished a few months ago, where a redevelopment project is proposed.

The area also includes the preservation of cultural heritage sites, such as the Torre Sa Porrassa – declared a site of cultural interest and dating back to the 17th century – and two houses designed by Josep Ferragut, a pioneer of the Modernista movement in Mallorca.

According to the planned schedule, the international architecture competition EUROPAN will take place between March and July 2027, during which time projects from the participating young architects can be submitted, and the jury’s decision will be announced in October 2027. The winning team would be responsible for developing the final design.

This project joins other sites in the Balearic Islands selected in previous editions of EUROPAN at the proposal of the regional government, such as the restoration and rehabilitation of Es Sindicat in Felanitx in the most recent edition and, in previous years, the social housing project in Ca n’Escandell (Ibiza) and the Parc Bit metro station project (Majorca).
