The Mallorcan musician Bernat Xavier Xamena will complete 17 Ironman triathlons in 17 days – one in each of Spain's autonomous communities – to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research and raise funds for new treatments.
It is the 'Estrella 17' initiative, which was presented Tuesday afternoon at an event held in the courtyard of the Consolat de Mar in Palma.
The event will benefit the charity L'Estrella de na Marta and is organized in collaboration with the charity El Sueño de Vicky, according to the regional government.
"All of us here today share the goal of fighting for the many stars who, like Marta, shine so brightly and remind us of the importance of investing in research and prevention. No child should have to go through something like this, but since these tragedies unfortunately happen, we have a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure there is more research, more options, more hope, and a brighter future," said the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Jaume Bauzá, during the launch event.
In this spirit, he emphasized, the 'Star 17' challenge was born: a charity challenge in which Xamena will travel through the 17 autonomous communities, completing 17 Ironman triathlons in 17 days. "No big deal," Bauzá added.
"It's a challenge that inspires great respect just thinking about it, one of those that only you can undertake. You know you are not alone; we are all here to cheer you on and to ensure that the day comes when no star has to start shining too soon. Keep your strength and spirits high," the minister concluded.
Also in attendance were officials such as the president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the Government Delegate for the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez. Although the regional president, Marga Prohens, was scheduled to be there, she was ultimately unable to attend for health reasons.
