PALMA, 19 (EUROPA PRESS)

This year's Cinema in the Open Air program, organized annually by the Palma City Council, pays tribute to the pioneers of film history with screenings of the films 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' and 'The General'.

The series began on August 3 and will end on September 2, according to a press release from the City Council. In total, 15 feature films and seven short films will have been screened.

The City Council has highlighted that the screenings take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 9:00 PM, with "exceptional" attendance. Most are shown in Ses Estacions Park, although during the last week they will move to Francesc Garcia Orell Square.

The silent films are scheduled for next Monday, August 24, for the film directed by Robert Wiene, while the film starring and directed by Buster Keaton, which will be screened on Wednesday, September 2, will conclude the 'Cinema a la Fresca' program.

Released in 1920, *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (*Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari*) is considered one of the great masterpieces of German Expressionist cinema. Starring Conrad Veidt and Werner Krauss in the lead roles, the film tells the story of a hypnotist who uses a sleepwalker to commit murders.

The inclusion of this film in the Cinema in the Park program is the result of a collaboration with Inselradio Mallorca. The screening will be accompanied by live musical performance from DJ Raphael Marionneau.

Meanwhile, the American film *The General*, which this year commemorates the centenary of its release, benefits from the undeniable talent of one of the great names of early cinema, Buster Keaton, who, in addition to co-directing the film with Clyde Bruckman, played the lead role.

The story is based on a true event that took place in 1862 during the Civil War, as told in a book by William Pittenger published a year later, which describes a spectacular locomotive chase that Keaton presents in a comedic tone.

In addition to these two great examples of silent cinema, Parc Ses Estacions will host the screening of 'Weapons' this Wednesday, directed by Zach Cregger (United States, 2025).

Next week, it will be the turn of the dialogue-free animated film 'Flow: A World to Save', directed by Gints Zibalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium, 2024), and the feature film 'Las chicas de la estación,' by Juana Macías (Spain, 2024), which has close ties to Mallorca, especially due to the involvement of the production company La Perifèrica and IB3, as well as having been partially filmed in Palma.

Starting next week, the program will move to Plaza Francesc García Orell, where the public can enjoy screenings of 'Es gegant des Vedrà,' by Ibizan director Héctor Escandell (Monday, August 31), and 'Un like de Bob Trevino', as well as the legendary Buster Keaton film 'The General'.

This year's edition of the film series also includes a selection of short films, with the following yet to be screened: 'Horrorscope' this Wednesday, in collaboration with the Mecal festival; 'Coin Coin' on Tuesday, August 25, also thanks to a collaboration with Mecal; 'La innocencia', on Wednesday the 26th, and, at the Francesc García Orell plaza location, 'Charlie', on Tuesday, September 1st, presented by the Majordocs festival.
