As has been the case every summer for the past thirteen years, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge—held in the lead-up to the Monaco Yacht Show (which will take place September 23–26)—serves as an appetizer that’s increasingly feeling more like the main course. The venue: the Monaco Yacht Club. The dates: July 8 through 11. The focus: sustainable maritime innovation.
This thirteenth edition also makes history by setting a record for the highest number of participants: 56 teams representing 22 countries and 34 universities, with participants from the United States and China taking part for the first time. More than 1,000 students, young engineers, and professionals from the maritime industry are gathering at this event, which serves as a testing ground for next-generation zero-emission technologies.
Supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the competition serves as an open-air laboratory where participants will compete in four main categories: Energy Class, where electric and hybrid technologies will be tested; AI Class, to advance navigation through artificial intelligence with autonomous and unmanned prototypes; SeaLab Class, floating laboratories dedicated to advanced experimentation with emerging energy sources; and Open Sea Xperience, designed as a bridge to commercial applications, bringing together brands and shipyards with CE-certified zero-emission vessels.
A wide range of innovations will be on display at the show, including hydrogen propulsion, electric battery systems, methanol, the use of foils, and sustainable materials. Among the most anticipated projects are the 16-meter all-electric Wia 520HT yacht and Weenav’s KRONOS 300 electric propulsion system, capable of delivering 300 caballos de fuerza continuously.
Beyond the races, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge allows visitors to explore the paddocks, simulators, and technology demonstrations. On land, the event will also feature the Job Forum to connect engineers with major companies in the sector and will host key conferences. On July 9, the Advanced Yachting Technology Conference will be held, focusing on cutting-edge innovation, followed on July 10 by the Alternative Fuels & Sustainable Yachting Conference, which will examine the potential of alternative fuels, nuclear propulsion, wind power, and advances in electrification. True luxury is sustainable.
