Pioneer Yachts is ushering in a new era of solar-electric catamarans

Pioneer Yachts will unveil its new PY60 electric catamaran at the 2026 Cannes Boat Show.

The yachting industry welcomes a new player specializing in electric propulsion and energy self-sufficiency. German company Pioneer Yachts, founded in Stralsund by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank, is making its debut with a concept focused on long-range solar-electric navigation. Its first model, the PY60, is a 60-foot catamaran designed to operate with complete energy independence thanks to an integrated system of solar panels and electric propulsion.

A new German brand focused on sustainable navigation

Pioneer Yachts was founded on a distinctly technical and functional philosophy. Based on the German Baltic coast, the company was established to meet a market need that remains largely unmet: electric boats capable of operating reliably in real-world sailing conditions and with a long range.

Behind the project is Mike Frank, an engineer from Bremen and founder of the energy group meistro Energie, which has specialized for two decades in supplying CO₂-free energy from its own solar farms. His experience in the energy sector has served as the foundation for bringing a vision focused on efficiency, operational reliability, and system optimization to the nautical sector.

Far from treating sustainability as merely an aspirational goal, Pioneer Yachts is committed to measurable technical solutions designed for long-term use at sea.

PY60: a solar-electric catamaran designed for long voyages

The company’s first model, the PY60, embodies this philosophy in a 60-foot catamaran designed for long-range sailing with 100% solar-electric propulsion.

The project combines German engineering with Italian design. The naval architecture and exterior design were developed by Cossutti & Ganz, while the interiors were designed by Micheletti + Partners.

Equipped with integrated solar panels and electric motors, the PY60 can reach a top speed of 11 knots and maintain a cruising speed of 7.5 knots. The vessel is designed to offer high energy autonomy and minimize reliance on port infrastructure or fossil fuels.

The brand also emphasizes that the power system has been developed as a coherent and integrated architecture, prioritizing reliability and continuous operation over experimental or conceptual solutions.

Pioneer Yachts, founded by Mike Frank, aims to establish itself in the growing market for high-end sustainable yachts.

Engineering designed for real-world use at sea

One of the key distinguishing features of the project is the practical approach that Pioneer Yachts intends to take in developing future vessels. The first PY60, named Pioneer One, will be operated directly by Mike Frank himself, with the aim of gathering real-world operational data and optimizing future iterations of the model.

According to the company’s founder, the goal is to monitor the vessel’s performance under real-world sailing conditions in order to refine both the energy systems and the onboard operational experience.

This approach ties in with the maritime heritage of the founder—the son of a merchant marine captain—and reinforces the professional and technical focus that Pioneer Yachts seeks to instill in its range.

World premiere at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival

The first PY60 is scheduled to be launched in the summer of 2026 and will make its international debut at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival, which will take place from September 8 to 13.

With this launch, Pioneer Yachts aims to establish itself in the growing segment of high-end sustainable vessels, a market that continues to evolve, driven by electrification, energy efficiency, and the search for new low-emission boating solutions.
