Mozart's Requiem: Ibiza Cathedral pays tribute to the legacy of the Austrian genius

The island will commemorate the 270th anniversary of the Austrian composer’s birth with a free concert in an iconic venue.

Inside the Cathedral of Ibiza.

The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will find an environment worthy of his legacy in the Cathedral of Ibiza. On November 1st at noon, the cathedral will host a special free concert featuring the famous Requiem, one of the most moving works in the classical repertoire. The event, which coincides with All Saints’ Day, will combine music, heritage, and spirituality on a day marked by remembrance and reflection.

The program offers a journey through two compositions by the Austrian genius: the Laudate Dominum, K. 339, a piece of particular delicacy and lyricism, and the Requiem in B minor, K. 626, Mozart’s last great work, which remained unfinished after his death in December 1791, when he was only 35 years old.

The choice of this composition for a day like All Saints adds a special dimension to the experience. Its musical intensity and its connection to the memory of the departed find in the Cathedral of Ibiza an environment that invites listeners to contemplation, in a meeting where historic architecture and sacred music interact naturally.

An event showcasing great voices and musical talent.

The concert will feature four soloists: soprano Tanya Durán-Gil, mezzo-soprano Adriana Mayer, tenor Néster Martorell, and bass Sebastià Peris. They will be accompanied by the Amalthea Chamber Choir, conducted by Marta Mármol, and the Balearic Islands Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Joan Barceló. Juan F. Ballesteros will serve as musical director.

The Requiem holds a unique place in the history of music, not only for its expressive power but also for the circumstances surrounding its creation. Mozart received the commission anonymously in 1791 but did not live to complete the score. After his death, his pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr completed the work, which would become one of the most recognized and beloved pieces of his repertoire.

Their performance in Ibiza will offer a vision of a composition that, more than two centuries later, continues to captivate audiences with its ability to blend solemnity, emotion, and beauty.

Music, history, and heritage in the heart of Ibiza

The initiative has the support of the Ibiza Island Council, the Diocese of Ibiza, musical organizations, and companies on the island. Sara Ramon, the council’s councillor for Culture, Education, and Heritage, has highlighted the value of bringing a work of this significance to one of the territory’s most iconic historic spaces.

The proposal also highlights the role of culture as a means to bring heritage closer to the public and allow them to discover these spaces from new perspectives. On this occasion, Mozart’s music will serve as the guiding thread of an experience that links the universal legacy of classical music with the historical identity of Ibiza.

The concert will begin at 12:00 PM on Sunday, November 1, at the Cathedral of Ibiza, and admission is free. Program and performer details can be found at www.just4you.es/requiem-ibiza/.
