PALMA, 15 (EUROPA PRESS)

Pere Joan Pons, the senator for Mallorca, will be the new Government Delegate for the Balearic Islands, replacing Alfonso Rodríguez, who announced his resignation on Tuesday to focus on his mayoral campaign in Calvià.

The change, according to sources familiar with the decision who spoke to Europa Press, is expected to take effect at the Council of Ministers meeting on October 27.

Pere Joan Pons, born in Palma, holds a degree in Information Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and a law degree from the University of Barcelona (UB).

Currently, in addition to serving as a senator for Mallorca, he is vice president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and a member of the PSIB-PSOE Executive Committee.

The outgoing Government Delegate announced on Tuesday that he will soon step down from his post “after three years of intense work” to run for mayor of Calvià again in the municipal elections scheduled for May 2027.
