The sociologist born in Palma, Antoni Tarabini, died on Monday at the age of 86, according to a statement published by the PSIB on the social media platform X.
"Antoni Tarabini has passed away, and this society he loved so much has lost one of its most prominent figures," the political organization lamented.
Tarabini was born in Palma in 1940 and was one of the founders of the PSIB in 1976. With the arrival of democracy, Tarabini ran as a PSOE candidate for mayor of Calvià in 1979 and later served as the councilor for Tourism, Transport, and Traffic on the Palma City Council during the term of socialist Ramon Aguiló.
"Toni dedicated his life to thinking and fighting from a critical and committed perspective to make our collective dreams a reality," the PSIB declared, stating that the sociologist "made us better," inspired them, and today leaves them "an immense void" and "a legacy for future generations."
The President of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, also lamented Tarabini's death in a message posted on X, in which she described him as a man "beloved, committed, and generous."
"A socialist of deep conviction, he dedicated much of his life to defending democracy, social justice, and a freer and more egalitarian society," he said.
Armengol also extended her condolences to the sociologist's family. "We will miss you, Toni," she concluded.
