Dead Sea water is good for your skin (and science proves it)

For centuries, the Dead Sea has been synonymous with well-being and healing for the various civilizations in the surrounding area. There is evidence that its therapeutic properties were already known in Cleopatra’s time, and today science is beginning to unravel the exact mechanisms that explain why this water—which is ten times saltier than ocean water—has such remarkable effects on the skin.

In addition to salinity, the Dead Sea’s unique location—more than 400 meters below sea level—plays a decisive role. The thicker atmospheric layer filters out part of the ultraviolet radiation, creating a spectrum of sunlight that is particularly beneficial for treating conditions such as psoriasis; studies have documented improvements of over 80% following 28-day therapeutic stays spent soaking in the area.

A unique mineral treasure

The water of the Dead Sea is notable for being composed of approximately 40% magnesium chloride, in addition to other minerals in exceptionally high concentrations. A study recently published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science analyzed its anti-aging effects using reconstructed human skin models and dermal fibroblast cultures.

The researchers observed that treatment with DSW stimulates the secretion of type 1 procollagen and elastin, increases hemidesmosomes (structures that strengthen the bond between the epidermis and the dermis), and promotes the regeneration of epidermal basal cells. Genetic analysis (RNA-seq) also revealed the activation of biological pathways linked to ion transport, the synthesis of extracellular matrix components, DNA repair, and cellular autophagy—all of which are key processes in the fight against skin aging.

Skin Barrier and Hydration

Another landmark clinical study, published in the *International Journal of Dermatology* by Ehrhardt Proksch’s team, demonstrated that bathing in a magnesium-rich Dead Sea saline solution significantly improves the skin’s barrier function, especially in people with dry, atopic skin. Volunteers who immersed one forearm in the saline solution for 15 minutes daily, while the other arm was treated only with tap water, showed a marked reduction in transepidermal water loss, increased hydration, and less redness and irritation.

In addition, a study published in the *Journal of Investigative Dermatology* revealed an unexpected finding: topical application of Dead Sea water activates beta-endorphin secretion in the skin, regulates the Keap1-Nrf2 system (linked to antioxidant protection) and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 and IL-6. This finding could partly explain the sense of well-being described by those who bathe in its waters, beyond purely dermatological relief.
